Matthew Sermon 8 – The Temptation of the Son of God (Mat 4.1-11)

The temptation of Jesus was not the first time the Son of God had been tempted. The first time was in Genesis 3. “Son of God,” you see, was Adam’s title before he fell. (Luke 3.38.) Moreover, it is our title in Christ: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God . . . and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ . . . .” (Rom 8.14, 17.) Thus the temptation of Jesus is important from a number of angles. It shows us what Jesus did on our behalf. It also gives us insight into what it means to be a child of God and how God intends to grow us up as His children. Secondly, it gives us insight into the nature of temptation, how it comes to us, and what gives it force. And finally, it gives us insight into how to handle temptation when it comes. I hope you enjoy the sermon. Thanks for listening. –Alan Burrow
