The Old Testament prophecies spoke of the coming of the Messiah and of the new covenant as a new exodus and a new entrance into the promised land. The early events of Jesus’ life have already demonstrated that Israel herself has become Egypt, spiritually speaking. So if Israel wants to become Israel, she needs to go back out into the wilderness and reenter the land with a new heart, united around a new and greater Moses – Jesus the Messiah. This is what John the Baptist’s ministry was all about. By going out to the wilderness beyond the Jordan and by baptizing in the Jordan, John was declaring for all to see that the time of the new exodus has come, the time of the new covenant has come, the time of the Messiah and of the kingdom of heaven have come. I hope you enjoy the sermon. Thanks for listening. -Alan Burrow
